The air war in North Africa has been so far a bit forgotten in the last decades, only a few books having been released. This is probably due to two factors, the lack of interest of the Italians for this part of their history, and the British archives which are far to be complete for this theatre of operations. Some of these books are now obsolete and need to be really updated. Two authors, well known for their great interest for the biplanes fighters (H. Gustavsson) and for the Italian air force (L. Slongo) have decided to update a part of the air war in North Africa beginning with the first clashes in 1940 and 1941. This first volume covers the period from June 1940 to November 1940, and will be followed by another volume covering the period from December 1940 to the arrival of the German.
After an introduction establishing the situation in June 1940 in detailing the British, French and Italians forces, the authors narrate day after day, the air war in this part of the World from 10th June, 1940 to 30th November, 1940. Some recollections and combat reports are also included to illustrate the text which is backed by a good selection of photographs and a few pages of colour profiles, the whole giving a very interesting book. Very well documented, the book brings new details of the war in this area which actually started with poor means.
The book will for sure interest any historian or enthusiast and can be recommended without hesitation.

La guerre aérienne en Afrique du nord a souvent été négligée, et rares sont les livres qui traitent de ce sujet. Cela tient à deux faits : le manque d’intérêt des Italiens pour cette période de leur histoire, et des archives parfois fragmentaires du côté britannique pour ce théâtre d’opérations.
Deux auteurs, l’un passionné de biplans (H. Gustavsson), l’autre spécialiste de l’aviation italienne (L. Slongo) se sont penchés sur ce sujet et un premier volume de 224 pages nous est proposé par MMP dans sa collection « blanche » qui est plutôt destinée aux historiens. Ce volume couvre la période juin à novembre 1940, et sera suivi par un second volume, lequel traitera de la période allant de décembre 1940 à l’arrivée des Allemands.
Après quelques pages d’introduction sur les forces en présence en juin 1940 (italiennes, britanniques et françaises), ce livre relate ensuite au jour le jour, les activités aériennes les plus marquantes du 10 juin au 30 novembre 1940. De temps à autre, des témoignages ou rapports de combat viennent agréablement illustrer le livre. Il y a un bon équilibre entre les photos et le texte et la présentation générale est sobre. Le texte est certes en anglais mais très accessible. Avec un petit cahier de profils en couleur, nous avons entre les mains un bon ouvrage historique sur cette période assez méconnue. Le prix est plus que raisonnable (moins de 30 €) au regard du nombre de pages et des informations contenues dans ce livre très documenté et sérieux.
