Pour nombre d’Européens, l’association des mots « Tunisie » et « aviation » n’évoque qu’une destination touristique et le moyen de s’y rendre. Privilégiée par sa situation géographique, la Tunisie s’avéra un pivot tant méditerranéen qu’africain, et dispose comme sa voisine l’Algérie d’une histoire aérienne non négligeable qu’il eût été dommage de négliger plus longtemps.
La Tunisie, qui fut le premier pays d’Afrique à recevoir du courrier aérien, a vu défiler dans ses cieux des pilotes de renom, de Garros à Coli et de Costes à Georges Madon, l’enfant du pays, et s’enorgueillit aujourd’hui de disposer avec Tunis Air, de l’une des compagnies aériennes les plus sûres du monde. Plutôt qu’une approche strictement chronologique de l’aviation tunisienne, depuis la célèbre traversée de Roland Garros vers une Tunisie coloniale jusqu’à la gazelle rouge d’après la tunisification de l’aéronautique, l’auteur a structuré son livre en chapitres thématiques, développant plus particulièrement les sujets les plus marquants, dans une approche originale qui permet d’aborder certains thèmes isolément.
Habib Soussia, technicien aéronautique, a illustré son ouvrage d’une iconographie riche et variée, et toujours à propos. De toute évidence, son livre ne saurait intéresser que le seul lectorat tunisien, en particulier en raison des liens importants qui unirent longtemps l’aviation de la France métropolitaine et celle des pays du Maghreb. Il serait donc dommage que cet ouvrage soit boudé dans la patrie de Roland Garros.

The combination of the words « Tunisia » and « aviation » makes many Europeans think merely of a tourist destination and the way to reach it. Privileged by its ideal geographical location, Tunisia has proved to be a Mediterranean as well as an African staging post, and together with its neighbouring Algeria, has a substantial air history which would be worth considering.
First African country to receive air mail, Tunisia had the privilege to see many renowned pilots pass through, namely Garros, Coli, Costes, and even Georges Madon, born and bred in the country. It is also proud today to have one of the safest air companies in the world: Tunis Air. Rather than presenting a strictly chronological approach to Tunisian aviation, from the famous Roland Garros crossing of the Mediterranean during the colonization period up to the red gazelle motif symbolizing the tunisification of aeronautics, the author has divided his book into chapters according to the most memorable subjects and adopting an original approach which allowed him to tackle some topics separately.
Mohamed Habib Soussia, air technician, has also illustrated his book with a rich, varied, and relevant iconography. This work would not evidently attract a Tunisian readership only, particularly due to the crucial links which have long united the aviation of Metropolitan France and the Maghreb countries.
